Project Overview

Poll Everywhere was evolving from a polling tool to a real-time, AI-powered presentation platform. But the creation experience? It felt more like data entry than storytelling. My job was to design the new platform for speed, clarity, and flow so creators could do less clicking and more thinking.

Pain Points

Users had to jump between multiple views just to make a simple update.

Key settings were buried in modals or scattered across the interface.

The workflow felt disconnected and slow, especially for repeat users.

Competitive platforms (like Mentimeter and Slido) offered a smoother creation experience.

Goal

Eliminate friction and empower users to build presentations faster, with less effort and more delight.

Legacy Experience

Legacy Experience

Legacy Experience

The legacy experience (V1) required 6+plus steps across nested modals which added friction and slowed down frequent users.

This version lacked clarity and screen flexibility.

Early Sketches: Mapping the Creation Experience

These early sketches explored how to streamline poll creation by guiding users from activity prompts to inline editing. I focused on minimizing clicks, grouping related steps and establishing a consistent pattern for navigation, content input, and customization.

I explored modular panels and prompt based entry utilizing AI to reduce the number of steps to keep users in flow.

Wireframes informed early alignment with stakeholders.

AI activity prompt

The user can enter a manual prompt or click on one of the cards to begin generating a slide.

This design featured a combination of ideas for preference testing (Prompt ideas & Coaching examples).

AI prompt continued

This screen shows how the prompts will populate in the text area. The user has the option to edit or create.

Generating Activity

The previous prompt that was written or selected will be shown on this screen. The user is given the option to return to the previous screen however, that is dependent upon the timing of the AI generator.

I focused on enabling our users to customize their activity within a single screen by reducing clicks and condensing the settings panel. Categorizing options improved clarity, while inline editing supported faster poll changes and kept relevant items at the forefront.

Faster Poll Creation

When a new activity is created, users are prompted to edit the title inline with AI prompt suggestions "chips" to enhance clarity and engagement.

Inline editing & correctness

Users can now edit poll options inline, remove, or reorder items, and immediately preview layout changes. This reduces cognitive load and allows for quicker iteration.

The AI prompt enabled presenters to create a full presentation from a single idea. By offering quick, editable suggestions, we reduced blank slate anxiety and gave users a flexible starting point without taking away control. The goal was to gain trust from our users.

This experience not only encouraged faster creation but it positioned Poll Everywhere to stay competitive in an evolving AI first market.

Final Design: Inline Editing & Customization

Original Flow:

Previously, users had to enter a separated editing screen to update their poll content which interrupted their flow and added unnecesary clicks.

Refined Approach:

In the final design, users can edit directly within the main view. Testing and previous feedback confirmed this made the process feel faster and more intuitive especially for frequent presenters.

Accessibility Win:

The entire screen now fully supports keyboard shortcuts and screen readers. This made the experience more accessible and efficient for all users.

Customization Panel

Customization Panel

I introduced a persistent side panel for themes, branding, and Ai driven suggestions. This allowed users to access customization tools without leaving the main editing view. By minimizing context switching, it kept the focus on content creation.
